Derma Fillers are a non-surgical cosmetic treatment to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and skin folds by restoring fullness to areas of the face and lips.
Young, healthy-looking skin contains an abundance of a naturally hydrating substance called hyaluronic acid. As we age, sunlight and other factors can reduce the amount of hyaluronic acid in the skin causing it to lose structure and volume and creating unwanted facial wrinkles and folds. Dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid suspended in a gel formulation which safely and effectively replaces the hyaluronic acid your skin has lost, bringing back its volume and smoothing away facial wrinkles and folds. They can also be used to ‘sculpt’ areas of the face such as the nose, jawline, and chin to correct depressions or disguise bumps and sharp angles.
Derma-fillers are commonly used in the treatment of facial lines, especially nasolabial lines (nose to mouth lines), marionette lines (mouth to chin lines) and peri-oral lines (lines around the mouth). They are also used very effectively to revolumise the cheeks and for sculpting and contouring of the face.
Who can have Dermal Fillers?
Most people can benefit from derma-filler treatment but there are some medical conditions and medications that preclude its use. Your aesthetics practitioner will discuss your medical history prior to treatment and will be able to advise you if there are any contra-indications. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not have derma-filler treatment as a precaution.
What does the treatment involve?
Before the treatment, you will have a consultation with our aesthetics practitioner who will assess your suitability and discuss your desired result and budget. The treatment time varies depending on what areas are being treated but should be no longer than approximately 30-40 minutes. A local anaesthetic cream is used to numb the area and the products used also contain local anaesthetic within the injection itself, which minimizes any discomfort during the procedure. The needle used to inject the filler product is very small and should not be painful – you may feel some mild discomfort but this will be minimal and short-lived. On occasion, your practitioner may also use a blunt-ended cannulae to implant the filler. this will help reduce the risk of bruising and discomfort.
You will see the results immediately although there may be some initial swelling so it’s best to wait a few days to see the actual result. The treatment will usually last from 9-12 months at which point the product will start to be broken down by natural metabolism and re-absorbed by your body.
Are there any side effects?
Serious or lasting side effects are very rare and most people are able to return to their normal daily activities immediately following treatment. There may be slight bruising, swelling or redness around the treated area but this should clear within a few days. If you have treatment around the lips/mouth bruising can last longer as this area is very vascular & can be more sensitive. Allergic reactions are rare but can include itching, swelling, hardness or small bumps under the surface of the skin and can last weeks or even months but these reactions are very rare.
